The Maasai people have sewn bead work on to leather skirts and have worked with beads for adornment for centuries and they are renowned for their bead work, and what better way to turn their lovely work into something that would suit the European market. Over 200 Maasai women and many others are involved in making these beautiful items - George, the "buckle man" who has established his own workshop, trained his own people, and makes the most beautiful brass buckles all by hand, Daniel who puts the belts together - again he has his own little workshop and has trained up his own people and a workshop where everyone works as a team and they train each other the skills they have learned since working with leather.
All the leather work is collected from the Tuareg people - a nomadic group - traversing the sands of Mauritania, Mali, Chad and Niger. With this leather products are put together combining beads and other pieces so making the end result a more interesting and stunning product. Fair trade policies are adopted within the business. All the belts are individual since handmade by different crafts people and so unique!
The other belts with white or earth/bronze beadwork (full beaded, stunning!) are 5 cm wide but same length as above.
